5 Steps To Achieving Your Goals and Moving Through Stuck

Jan 19, 2026

Humans, funny beings aren’t we? We keep doing things over and over again the same way expecting a different result. Last time I checked that is likened to insanity. Are we all insane? To some degree I definitely think so.

I have a favorite quote from Ghandi:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.”

Let’s face it our habits will make or break us. From the way we think and feel to what we do. We develop habits from a very young age that come with us through the years yet those very habits may be what is holding us back from achieving our goals as life unfolds.

This is where coaching becomes magic and a real life miracles happen. Life coaching, in particular solution focused coaching based in neuro-linguistic programming dissects and looks at with a magnifying glass the thoughts, words, actions, habits, and values that create the reality of your life. You get to look at your life from a totally different perspective and see what changes are going to lead you to your goal.

Want to change your life? Change your mind, your thoughts, your words, your actions, your habits and align your values.

Ok great you are saying, that helps! Now what?

It’s going to take some work on your part, there are no easy pill fixes here. Which brings to mind something I want to share with you. Dick Beckards formula for change, D x V x F > R

Where D = dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, V= a vision for what is possible, F = First steps to reach the vision and is all greater than R = resistance to change.

That also brings to mind I believe something said by Tony Robbins on a similar note. We are motivated by two things, PAIN and PLEASURE. In order to change, the pain of moving forward must be less than the pain of staying where you are.

You have to REALLY WANT to change, and find the underlying why that is stronger than the comfort of staying the same. Do you REALLY WANT it?

Here are 5 steps to achieving your goals and moving through stuck.

1.Take record of and become aware of the thoughts you think on a daily basis. The average human being has some 65, 000 thoughts per day so be mindful of what they are! What are your thoughts towards yourself, toward others and situations? Are they positive and uplifting? Are they productive?

2. What is your vocabulary like? Did you know the English language has the most negative connotative words than any other language? The words we use are very powerful. Our words are energy backed by the emotion we give them. For instance have you ever said, “I have to work out, eat right, do the laundry, dishes, clean the house, go to work, finish that project, etc. etc.” or I should …., or Don’t do that or Don’t forget.

That’s a lot of should, have to’s, nots and don’ts isn’t it? Do those phrases rev you up and fill you with inspiration? I didn’t think so.

I invite you to become mindful of the words you use every day and to try inserting the following instead, “I choose to”…”I want to”…”I am excited to”…

Does that feel different?

3. Look at your goal, your vision and take small actionable steps towards it daily. Just one, every day. Every morning ask yourself what is one thing I can do today that will get me closer to my goal? Commit! Do it!

4. Ask yourself the question what powerful habits must I develop in order to achieve this goal? Write them out. Did you know that it takes 21 days of daily action to create a new habit? After you have identified the new habits you want to create commit to one every month. Just one. If you took this concept and applied it throughout the year you would have twelve new positive habits. My guess your life is going to look a lot different!

5. What do you value? This can often be a tricky question for people. However we can begin to answer it easily by asking ourselves a few different questions.

What are you willing to get in trouble over?

What qualities do you want in a friend?

What must you have in your life to be fulfilled?

Think of three people you deeply admire. What characteristics do they have that you highly regard?

If you were on your deathbed and you wanted to tell you children and loved ones your top three most important things you learned in your life, what would they be?

Take some time and think about your answers to all the questions above. It will help you create a map that will aid you in achieving your goals.
