Connection: The New Leadership Commodity
Jan 27, 2026
Personal relationships run the world — why would business be any different? Whether you want to sway and influence in the boardroom, set yourself up for that next-level promotion, foster greater alignment across teams, or find new ways to coach and develop your team members — connection is the key.
The Reality We Find Ourselves In
My own leadership experience, coupled with thirteen years of leadership development coaching, has provided vast insight into achieving leadership goals and objectives. Despite the best intentions, I’ve noticed that leaders often misplace their focus when trying to up-level their leadership.
Whether managing a company re-org, landing a big client, presenting to senior leadership, or completing a project on time and on budget — the tendency is to focus on tasks, technology, and deliverables rather than on people.
Our minds become captured by the noise: "Do I have the right information?" "Am I saying this the right way?" "Will they agree with me?"
This often leads to fear-induced anxiety that disrupts communication entirely — leaving you stumbling over words and feeding further self-doubt about your ability to lead.
Our Brain on Fear
When fear is activated, the body’s fight, flight, or freeze response takes over — whether the threat is real or imagined. The reptilian brain (focused on survival) and the limbic system (our emotional brain) work together to protect us. The result? Access to the prefrontal cortex — the seat of logical reasoning, creativity, and communication — is shut down.
In leadership, fear often comes from within. And because the fear is internal, you alone have the power to flip the switch.
The Power of Shifting Your Focus
Misplaced focus, combined with a mind full of inner noise, sabotages both confidence and leadership outcomes.
The way forward is to shift your focus to connection:
- Connection with yourself through positive inner dialogue
- Connection with others through authentic engagement
When I coach leaders, they are rarely bad communicators or lacking knowledge. Instead, they need to:
- Create a systemic practice of leaning into their strengths, talents, and accomplishments — rather than letting the inner critic lead.
- Focus on being human — building genuine connections through curiosity and presence.
When you create inner stillness and confidence, and shift your external focus to genuine connection, you start to hear what really matters to others: their challenges, needs, and values. From there, aligning your language and approach becomes natural.
Building Genuine Connection
Once your inner foundation is rooted in stillness and confidence, here are some ways to build genuine connection with others:
- Be Human. No matter their title — CEO, VP, high-stakes client — they are human first. Start there.
- Be Present. Practice full presence. Move beyond level one listening (listening to respond) and level two (listening to understand) to level three listening — listening to the whole person and environment.
- Be Massively Curious. Set ego and agendas aside. Through open-ended questions and true curiosity, connection flows naturally.
- Be Helpful. We all have unique gifts and skills. Thoughtfully consider how you can be helpful to others — even a small gesture builds goodwill and trust.
- Be Authentic and Genuine. Authenticity means alignment: your values, beliefs, words, and actions are congruent. Know your core values deeply — they are your leadership north star.
In Conclusion
The biggest truth to remember: People are just people. We are biologically hardwired for connection.
When fear disrupts authenticity, it’s because we fear we are not enough — not smart enough, skilled enough, or ready enough.
But only you have access to your inner switch — the one that unlocks creativity, confidence, and connection. When you steward your relationship with yourself, you naturally become a great steward of connection with others.
Leadership is an inside-out job. And in today’s world, connection is the most powerful commodity.
