Navigating The Inner Storm: How Self-Leadership Anchors Us Through Overwhelm

Jan 27, 2026

You are a smart, successful individual—generally quite happy with your life and maybe even cultivating a deeper sense of joy and purpose.

You’re working hard, making movements (and sometimes even strides) in your goals around health, wealth, family, and career. You've done, and continue to do, the inner work. The transformation is real.

Then suddenly—without warning—you shift from feeling inspired and excited to overwhelmed and frustrated.

What just happened?

You might even ask:

“Why am I striving so hard if nothing is happening?” “The universe isn’t bending to my will or effort—why keep going?” “What is this all for?”

You're feeling the tension between who you’ve been and who you are becoming—and sometimes that stretch can feel like a storm.

Who ever said becoming our highest self was easy?

We often compare ourselves to others' external success, dismissing what we don’t see: their inner and outer storms. Their self-doubt. Their nights of questioning everything.

So what do we do when we’re riding the wave to our highest self… and the waters get choppy?

We return to what’s simple. What’s always with us:

How to Find the Eye of the Storm

  • Breathe. Just simple, intentional breath. A quick inhale... YA. A slow exhale… HOOO. Relax into the breath... AHHH.
  • Accept and allow. Meet your frustration with presence. When we allow emotions to be, they begin to lose their grip.
  • Water and feed yourself. Hydrate. Nourish. Often our most basic needs are the first to go missing when we're overwhelmed.
  • Meet yourself with compassion. No judgment. No harsh inner voices. You’re on a sacred journey. Every part of it matters.
  • Be curious. Ask yourself: Am I holding expectations of where I should be? Is there a timeline I’m married to? Am I comparing my path?
  • Reconnect to your why. What’s driving all of this? What’s the deeper purpose behind your pursuit?
  • Allow space. Commune with nature. If you can’t go outside, sink into the present moment through your senses.
  • Wait for inspired action. Don’t force the next step. It will come. And when it does—move gently with it.

We are always leaders, whether or not we’re leading others.

The better we get at leading ourselves through stormy waters, the more gracefully we’ll help others reach calmer shores.

This is self-leadership. This is healing. This is the dance.
